Day 24 - Gray Day

Last night while I was trying to write my post, Shift was asking if her friend could spend the night. On a school night. Which is normally just an automatic no. But she's very persistent. They've been getting up early and walking to school together lately...and she was all, it'll make it easier. We'll be quiet. We'll go straight to bed...blah blah blah. Finally I was like, fine, but don't ask me again, not happening again...grrr! lol...I was too distracted with trying to get through my post. So, they were actually good...didn't hear a peep. Until this morning at 7:20..."Mommy, I feel like I'm going to throw up." NNNOOOOOOooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! So she's dry heaving over the toilet...lovely. Then she's all, my friend doesn't feel good either. Um, no. I am not dealing with this. This is what I get for letting you have a sleepover on a school night. I am not gonna be responsible for someone else's kid missing school! lol...so I said I'm either taking her friend to school, or if she really feels sick, she needs to go home. We are not having a fun "sick" day at our house! lol...she wound up going home...did not need that headache! hahaha

Sarah and Kim and I finally managed to get together for a walk. We've been wanting to start trying to walk at least weekly, but never quite managed to all be free at the same time. Even though it was a bit drizzly, we did it! Yay! lol...there's a beautiful reservoir nearby with a great trail. We even saw some baby goslings...thought the momma geese would be hissing at us, but they just ran away. I find it's always easier to get motivated to exercise when you have someone else pushing you on. Now if I could just do that every day!

This year has been crazy with the wildlife...coyotes have been attacking dogs on a lot of the hiking trails! Kim saw one run right through her yard! Supposedly it's pup season, so they're protecting their young...but they've been really aggressive. I've never once heard of them attacking until this year! I didn't even know there were coyotes around here! And they aren't just small dogs they're attacking...I heard one bit a pit-bull! Yikes! So they've got this sign posted at the trail. I don't know why they aren't taking care of the problem...it's only a matter of time until they attack the people with the dogs!

Got a few things done around the house. Trying to plan for the party this weekend. Our sweet neighbor stopped by and grabbed all my junk that's been on the side of the house. John was making a dump run and offered to take all the rotten wood, etc, that's been there for months!!! Thanks John!!!

Finally got David to get his blood work done at 3:00...I wanted to go sooner, but he was exhausted. Of course, it took forever, so then I couldn't pick up the kids...thankfully Kim grabbed them for me! And that's about it...;)

David says he "weirdly enough likes my necklace, even if it is a bit 80s"
he didn't like my booties though, they were too 80s! lol
It was cooler today, so I wore my awesome poncho-ish top...super comfy and cute!

Awww, Buddy just asked if he could paint my nails! He's too cute!

silver totally counts as gray!
then he wanted me to take his picture so everyone knew who did them! lol...I think he knows he's adorable!

Day 23 - Monday Madness...plus grief remembered.

Today David had his PT and speech therapy at the ungodly hour of 7:30 am! Ugh!!! Which meant we had to leave before 7:00...thankfully traffic actually wasn't too terrible. Big thanks to my friend who took the kids for me...and made them breakfast! David's knees have both been hurting...the therapist wrapped them up and instantly so much better! Sounds like it was the quad muscles were working hard (which is good) and the pain radiated down. So as he keeps doing the exercises he has for homework, it should get stronger and less painful.

When we got home David went back to bed...lol...wish I could have too! But, instead I got to go see one of my friend's brand new baby! Oh my goodness, such a tiny, adorable munchkin! LOVED holding her...she was just too cutesie! Haven't had a bitty baby in my arms in ages! Once I got back home, started working on stuff around the house to prep for David's birthday party this Saturday! Yikes! lol...got lots to do! Got all the (giant!) weeds on the patio sprayed...need to clean out the smoker, clean the house, etc... Don't love all the work, but always enjoy having a party!

Then I woke David back up for lunch and then to head to his follow up appointment with his radiologist. She's great, really nice. Thankfully she's finally getting all the updates from Sloan...sometimes they don't talk so great with each other. At this point, she'll step back though...David will be getting his care from his oncologist right now, unless things change.

Got a wonderful surprise in the mail today...the kids' elementary school sent us a grocery gift card. I was so touched! Totally unexpected, but I'm very grateful!

Oh you guys, we have an awesome guest post!

Brewer going gray in May!!!

Isn't that amazing!!! My friend Nicole (Sarah's SIL) sent me this pic of her beautiful horse today! Love it!!! And couldn't agree more with her tag!

"Brewer is sporting gray in May for brain tumor awareness. We miss you David Hughes!💗Keep fighting Woolley family!👊🏻 ‪#‎gograyinmay‬ CANCER SUCKS!!!"

Sarah sent me a throwback pic to post as well. Thank you!!!

Dave and I adorned in Grey last May for Brain Cancer awareness. Amongst other areas of the disease, Dave had two brain tumors, but we also wanted to show our love and support to David and Mary Catherine Woolley ❤️❤️ He cared deeply about David and I believe he is urging God to take care of his buddy on earth.

So I caught y'all up through August of last year. Which brings us to September...which basically sucked.

September 2015

Fluffernutter turned 12, which was pretty cool! lol...I actually have no idea what we did though...appparently I took no pictures and wrote nothing down. If I had to guess, I imagine she had ribs and potato salad...that's what she usually requests! haha

Oh wait, I found some pics! lol...

new guitar case...lol...she loved telling everyone it was made out of hemp!
She loves pineapples!
S'mores cake with Nutella filling
huh...she went different this time...lol...mac and cheese, beanie weenies, steak, and olives for her veggie...lol
aww, love this!
this would be an awesome pic if it wasn't for that chandelier pendant! haha
Mumsie was still here!

Mumsie headed home (don't feel bad for her...she was here about a month! lol)...and then Papa and Miss Lissy actually came for a couple days later...

which apparently meant she got another cake??? That's a Samoa cake!
She really, really wanted one of these!
Fluffernutter loves her Papa!
She's always been a Papa's girl!

So, that was the good part of September.

Honestly, I've put this part off for a really long time. I just didn't know how to start...what to say...how to say it. So I kept not doing it...which meant I kept not doing any blogs at all...and then as other bad news came it just got harder and harder. And honestly, it felt weird posting about my grief...when it's nothing compared to what his family was feeling...didn't want to try to hijack it and make it about us... See, I'm still having a hard time. OK. I'm just going to do my best...they know I love them...and I would never presume to try to portray what they went through. This is simply my viewpoint on an extremely difficult time for everyone.

So, at the end of August our dear friend Dave was hospitalized with complications. I can still barely think about it, let alone try to write about it.

...tears...

OK...

He was suffering greatly by this point...we had gone out a couple weeks earlier for his birthday (I posted about that a couple days ago). We were so happy to be able to go out, but he was really not well. He was in just an incredible amount of pain, I don't even know how he was able to function. But then he got even worse, and had an infection in his lungs and was admitted to the hospital. His body was by this point just riddled with tumors...God help me, it was so bad. Pretty soon we knew it was just a matter of time, there was nothing more the doctors could do. It's your worst nightmare, to hear that. When Sarah told me, I mean, there's nothing you can say to make it better. It's awful. There is no comfort at that point. The only thing that means anything at that point is your presence, love and support. So that's what I tried to do. Whenever the kids were in school, I stayed with her, as long as I wasn't intruding. I tried to go back in the evenings if she wanted company too.

Thankfully, the priority for the hospital staff was comfort care, so they were doing their best to make sure Dave wasn't in pain anymore. The amount of pain meds they needed to use was incredible though...like I said, it was amazing how much he was able to function with as much pain as he had. So it was a relief that he wasn't suffering like he had been. He was there in hospice care for about two weeks. Honestly, I felt incredibly honored to be allowed to share in the vigil. The last time he was awake when I saw him, he gave me a kiss...:'( It's a good memory for me...honestly, it really means the world to me.

He was such a good man. I am so blessed that we knew him, that we were friends. Our lives were definitely the better for having him in it. It was a heartbreaking day, on so many levels. I was incredibly sad, as he was my friend...devastated for Sarah, who had lost her husband...sorrowing for his boys...worried about my David as well...Dave was his best friend, and also I knew that this would be hard for him as he was struggling with his own cancer battle, and seeing a good friend pass from the disease would be depressing (it was)...and worried about my kids as well...they loved their "Uncle Dave" as they called him.

I still tried to help Sarah with whatever she needed in the week leading up to the funeral. Thankfully she had a lot of support. There were so many people at the wake, it was 3+ hours straight of constant arrivals. It just shows how much he meant to everyone. It sounds weird, but Dave's funeral was the most amazing service I've ever been to. Incredibly moving to see the testimony of his life, how many people he touched. He definitely had a zest for life! He was hilarious...had an amazing voice...loved pretty much every sport you can think of...was active with his boys' sports teams...awesome dad...wonderful husband...totally into all the scifi/nerdy fandoms (I always had fun geeking out with him!)...was a great friend, could talk cars with David forever. He was brave, full of faith, had his feet planted on the Rock. While it was a sad, sad day, it was also hopeful in the light of eternity. I was, of course, crying all throughout the service...but when it was the reception, I just lost it. I was a mess. I couldn't stop...I was trying to hide in the back. Eventually I guess I ran out of hydration, thank goodness.

Sarah and most of her closest friends...a couple missed the pic :/ (I literally almost dyed my hair dark again...but Dave had liked my hair, so I finally decided to leave it)

I don't know exactly what else to say. No words of mine could truly express all that he was and how loved he was. I mean, this all just barely scratches the surface. He is still missed, so much, every day, by his friends for sure, and most of all by his family. We all loved him, but we know we will see him again.

The Davids :) I love this picture
semi-serious...totally smashed...David, Dave and Torrey
haha...the 3 Musketeers...they were forced to be friends because of Kim, Sarah, and I...luckily they actually liked each other!
so not serious!  This was before cancer was on either of our minds...my 30th birthday party!
I love this pic I got at the town wide school race. He's so proud!
Forever loved and missed...David Hughes.

Day 22 - Church, Chores, and Church

So I totally slept in today...did not make it to first church. But got to second church with the whole fam! Even David! He wasn't feeling awesome though, so he stayed out in the lobby...and then went to the car. He felt like he was going to be sick :( He's actually thrown up a couple of times since starting chemo...no fun! We so appreciate everyone's care at church though! Pastor Dave has been praying for David every week during the service...along with the little boy who is also battling brain cancer. It really makes you feel the love of the community. Pastor Justin stopped to check on him as well, chatted for a few. David was happy he got to talk about Lead Belly with someone...lol...I don't know if he'd ever even heard of him. In case you're wondering, he's this crazy hardcore gangster musician from the 30s...who got pardoned from murder twice! Because he performed for the governor...of two different states! Crazy!!! He's been covered by tons of rock stars...Nirvana performed "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" on their unplugged performance on MTV. And do you know how I know all that??? Because that's the sort of stuff David geeks out about and tells me all about! lol

Anyways, got off track...lol...where was I? Oh yeah, church. So, David went to the car...he actually had someone else come hang out with him a bit, which was super nice! He managed to relax and feel a little better. Of course, he crashed as soon as we got home.

I like this pic! I look skinny! lol
love my cute shoes...Savers! lol
haha, yup!

When we got home, it was time for the kids to earn their keep! lol...Since we had a long day of fun yesterday, they had to get their chores done today. We usually do the bigger projects like mowing, bathrooms, etc, on Saturday. I let them off the hook, as they were all worn out from the fun...but I warned them it was totally happening after church. Of course, there were still some groans, but they did pretty good. The backyard is mowed, bathrooms are "clean" (yeah, their idea of clean isn't quite my idea, but it's gotta be better then they were to start with! lol)...house is fairly decent...I shan't complain.

Then I took the older two to Merge, which is the youth group at CLG. They had an awesome time (even if Shift had a bit of a teenage moment beforehand...I'm so tired, I don't want to go...blah, blah, blah...lol)...but they came out totally happy. See, Mommy knows best! ;) I know she's rolling her eyes at me right now! haha...but seriously, I do! Don't forget it!

Day 21 - Picnics, Pools, and Pics

Today's gray! Ready for a day of fun and relaxation!

Today, one of my friends, Magdalena, from my church ladies group invited us to go to her work's family picnic. Her company rented out a big outdoor event place for the day. There was a heated pool, rock wall, bounce house, photo booth, assorted events all day, face painting, all day buffet, unlimited cotton candy, popcorn, and ice cream. In other words, basically a kid's idea of heaven! lol Shift already had plans with one of her friends, but the younger three and I went. Magda also brought some of our other friends' kids too...we had a whole gang with us! lol

We had a great day! It was so much fun...they certainly didn't want to leave. Their favorites seemed to be the pool and the rock wall...although the cotton candy was definitely up there! lol Glitter must have had at least 5 cotton candies! Yikes!

Buddy has gray! Happy girl!
 look, Fluffernutter wore gray too!
she rang the bell!
friends!
hahaha...I actually tried...much harder than it looks! or maybe I'm just not as strong as I thought I was ;)
Buddy and Glitter actually made it all the way and rang the bell too!
They loved the pool!
Obstacle course races!
hahahaha
ice cream break!
 Buddy dropped his :(
Whew...he got a new one!
Thanks for the invite Magda! It was a perfect day!
our photo booth pics ;)

It was a really cool place...too bad they only do events...it would be neat to have more family days there!

When we got home, Fluffernutter and Glitter both crashed for a bit...the kids definitely all wore themselves out! David and I hung out, watched some shows. Then Sarah invited me out for an impromptu drink/snack...she managed to get out of work early! I already showered and had my sweats on, no makeup...but David was like, "GO!" He didn't have to tell me twice! lol...Sarah always teases me...I have a reputation for always being the most dressy one in the group...sue me! I like dresses! hahaha...so she was like..."for once I'm the dressy one and you're in sweats!" Seriously though, she looked so pretty in her work clothes...I wanted her dress! lol

And now, to bed! Nighty night.
